From his observations and in-depth analysis, al-Ghazali discovered the cause of mental illness and found a pattern of how behavior was formed. The pattern is that the knowledge (‘ilm) possessed by a person will produce a psychological state (hal) and then lead to behavior (‘amal). After finding the pattern, he continued and tested it by making a prognosis to find the right and effective method in the form of exercises (riyadah) and conquering desires (mujahadah) as a therapeutic strategy.
The aim of akhlaq transformation is to alter the psychological state (hal) by imparting new meaning to knowledge and refining behavior through goodness. Mizan al-‘Amal emphasizes that for optimal results from this transformation, knowledge (‘ilm) and behavior (‘amal) must be integrated. This approach is now recognized as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). This book is an explanation of the science of akhlaq which integrates the framework of modern psychology with al-Ghazali’s ideas in psychology. It categorizes al-Ghazali’s thoughts into various patterns, such as the structure of akhlaq, dynamics of akhlaq, developmental stages of akhlaq, psychopathology, and psychotherapy.
